Engineering's ASME Student Support

The Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC) is the only event of its kind that unites mechanical engineering students in order to further their careers through networking with major companies, developing relationships with students across the southeast United States, and displaying individual achievements through various competitions. These competitions allow our ASME members to be recognized on a national level as well as view other students’ accomplishments in similar fields. This year we hope to send 24 enthusiastic students to this years conference to showcase their talents and create relationships with professionals in the field as well as other engineering students across the nation.

The ASME Student Design Competition provides a platform for ASME Student Members to present their solutions to a range of design problems - from everyday household tasks to groundbreaking space exploration. Each team is required to design, construct and operate a prototype meeting the requirements of an annually determined problem statement.  This year's challenge is to design and develop a scaled-down version of a transporter capable of delivering granular materials, which will be guided by, at most, one person.

Seminole Shack Showdown is an annual event that is becoming a tradition at FSU. It is designed to advocate, educate and fundraise for Habitat for Humanity as well as connect various student organizations in an exciting way. The main purpose of this event is to make our campus and the Tallahassee community aware of substandard housing. Student organizations work along with Habitat for Humanity and build wooden shacks and "live" in them for a series of four days. These shacks stand to represent living conditions of families that live in substandard housing. They also become 24 hour kiosks of information for interested peers. The shacks will also "panhandle" (any type of approved fundraising effort) once in a while throughout the week to raise money in an effort to eliminate poverty housing in Tallahassee. ASME is teaming up with the Society of Women Engineers and Sustainable Energy Solutions to form the team "Engineers for Humanity".
