FSU Dance on American Popular Culture

Dance graduate students, Heather Boni, Amanda Sieradzki, Mary Roberts, and Jasmine Booker have been working together under the faculty supervision of Assistant Professor Hannah Schwadron, producing a panel of presentations for the upcoming Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association 2016 Annual Conference, Mar 22-25, 2016 in Seattle, Washington.

Help us get there!

Our panel, "Probing Choreographic Methods: How Making Dance Can Question Culture," shares excerpts of written and performance material on topic ranging from African American STEP to cruise ship dancing, mixed-ability dance, pop music rebel femmes, and improvisation.  As each participant reports on discoveries gleaned in the working group experience, they interrogate choreographic projects as products and producers of culture: How does one’s choreography engage distinct cultural perspectives? How are the desires, impulses, and assumptions about our projects culturally constructed? How can choreographic craft function as an artistic method for asking, as opposed to answering, these questions?
