As FSU moves forward with its new focus on Innovation and Entrepreneurship across campus, the School of Information is developing new methods for teaching students to innovate with emerging technologies!
In our course on Exploring Emerging Technologies, undergraduate students from across campus become innovators who take on design problems, use cutting-edge technology tools, and work together collaboratively to solve problems.
Last year, for instance, students in this class launched a 3D-printed copy of the FSU Torches into space on a weather balloon, using GoPro cameras to capture a 360-degree video of the torches floating more than 12 miles high above the earth.
This year, students are transforming FSU's iconic Landis Green into the world's largest FSU Torch by encouraging more than a thousand students from across campus to assemble on the Green in the shape of a Giant Torch of Innovation centered around President Thrasher.
Along the way, students are developing new skills in 3D printing, virtual reality, and digital media, pulling together to accomplish tasks that many of them initially thought would be impossible, and developing a sense of accomplishment that will last them for a lifetime.
With the generosity of donors, we will be able to sustain and expand this opportunity for students to innovate with emerging technologies at the School of Information for many years to come.
