The Classical Guitar Society at FSU will host the Florida Guitar Festival and Competition on FSU's campus in Tallahassee, FL from October 6-8, 2017. The Festival will feature performances and masterclasses by decorated FSU alumni Adam Holzman, winner of the Ernst von Dohnanhi Prize for Outstanding Achievement; Stephen Robinson, the first individual to earn a Doctorate in Music in Guitar from FSU; Andrew Zohn, internationally known as a performer, instructor, and composer; and the Akerman-Teixera Duo, comprised of outstanding musicians Mary Akerman and Robert Teixera. Additionally, 2016 Competition winner Jesus Serrano will return to FSU for a concert and masterclass and a youth orchestra will perform as part of the opening concert.
There will be three categories of competition this year so that everyone can participate: an open division for high level performers, a youth division for anyone under 18, and a recreational division for novice players who want to earn performing experience and get constructive feedback in a noncompetitive environment.
The Festival will also feature lectures on arts entrepreneuership and high school guitar teaching by experts in those fields as well as a guitar expo with high quality instruments from Chartwell Guitar and many other luthiers. A special effort to promote the Festival within local schools will be made to help expose students to classical music and a higher level of classical guitar playing.
