Expanding Academic and Life-Changing Opportunities

Our project is bringing two great programs together, the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (CARE) and the Office of Undergraduate Research. As a major research university, we know that high-impact educational experiences create better students, scholars, and global citizens. However, these experiences, such as international volunteering and travel, research, and internships, have been out of reach for many economically disadvantaged students. As CARE approaches its 45th anniversary, we want to expand our initiative to provide these life-changing opportunities to students who are among the first in their family to attend college.

"As open and cultured as I thought I was entering a foreign country really challenges you to see the world in a different light. The people of Sevalaya taught me their language, how to survive in a third world country, and how to be happy in life no matter what."

Anne Piervil CARE Student and Global Scholar

The Office of Undergraduate Research's Global Scholars program helps students secure summer internships at nonprofit organizations in developing countries around the world. While overseas, students live with local host families and work in community roles, such as teaching, youth mentorship, and economic development. Currently in its third year, Global Scholars' placements are low-cost and high-impact, providing a challenging academic and personal student development experience. FSU students in the program receive training before departure and must complete a capstone research project on an issue facing the overseas community after completing their internship. In the end, the Global Scholars program hopes to cultivate active citizens of the world who can utilize research and critical thinking skills to engage with different cultural perspectives and make a positive impact in the global community.

CARE is designed to provide an opportunity to enroll in college for students who were disadvantaged through educational and socioeconomic circumstances.  The impact of CARE, however, goes beyond simply providing access into college for students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.  CARE provides opportunities for students to enhance their academic abilities, engage in the campus community, develop and utilize leadership skills, and blaze a trail of success for others to follow.  As first-generation college students, CARE students ignite a legacy of higher education, inspiring family and peers to realize college as a reality.  Thus, the impact of CARE transcends beyond the FSU campus, resonating in the lives of all with whom CARE students connect.

Please give what you can. Help us open the world to a deserving student.
