Experiencing Culture "Beyond Borders"

The Beyond Borders Program provides FSU students with the opportunity to host students from abroad and share American culture and the experience of living on a US university campus with them. FSU students then have the opportunity to travel abroad and experience cultural immersion in the local host cultures while participating in activities and events that allow them to develop a deeper understanding of that country and its people.

Past participants in the Beyond Borders Program have reported gaining:

  • Life-long  friendships

  • Interpersonal skills

  • Intercultural communication skills

  • Collaboration skills

  • Global mindset

  • Self-awareness

  • Personal growth

  • Adaptability and resiliency

Current FSU Beyond Borders Exchanges:

  • The University of the West Indies-Mona Campus: Kingston, Jamaica- 1 week

  • Studentenwerk Dresden: Dresden, Germany (plus travel to Berlin)- 3 weeks

"This experience is super unique. It is not just a “study abroad” type program. Beyond Borders gives students the opportunity to immerse in the culture and truly experience it. At some point, anyone involved with the program is pushed out of their comfort zone, and I am a huge advocate for that. Beyond Borders is a great place to be challenged, learn new things, and grow."      - Beyond Borders FSU-Germany 2015-2016 Participant

"Overall, I have had a truly unforgettable experience in the Beyond Borders: Jamaica program. I have made wonderful friends, gained insight into a variety of aspects, such as culture, lifestyles, and academics, and have developed my own set of personal skills and knowledge. The hosting experience, class, and especially the trip itself have truly inspired me as a student, friend, traveler, and citizen of the world."       - Beyond Borders FSU-Jamaica 2014-2015 Participant
