Support for Student Leadership Council

The college's Student Leadership Council is composed of outstanding, discipline-specific social science students who work directly with the dean, faculty and staff to provide a student perspective in deciding and implementing the goals and initiatives of the college. But these students do more than simply act as as the liaison between the student body and the college administration. They promote the council's foundations of Scholarship, Leadership, and Service through programs and activities that benefit all the students of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, the greater Florida State University student body, and the community beyond campus.

Your support will help the SLC bring these rewarding programs to our students:

  • Get More Than a Degree is a fall involvement fair that showcases the many opportunities the college offers students to enhance their undergraduate education and boost their chances of future career success, including applied programs, internships, career advising, networking with alumni and professionals in a chosen field, international research and service projects, lectures and guest speakers, and more. Find out more about this initiative.
  • Service Projects are a great way to involve students with the wider community and provide valuable support for worthy organizations and causes. In the past, the SLC has taken on service projects for the International Rescue Commission and America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend Food Bank. SLC has also volunteered for local parks clean-up and maintained a team and booth at the annual Relay for Life fundraiser, The SLC plans three projects for the 2016-2017 academic year.
  • The Cultural Exchange is sponsored in partnership with the Center for Intensive English Studies, giving students the opportunity to engage in dialogue with students from other countries to learn about their cultures and exchange ideas and perspectives.
  • The Alumni Mentorship Program offers professional development workshops and one-on-one mentorships between distinguished college alumni and current students to give them the skills needed to jumpstart their careers. The mentorship has a particular focus on leadership skills and career preparation. Topics discussed include career-specific information, professional presentation, professional communication, problem solving, time management, goal setting, leadership strategies, and networking.
  • The Student Mentorship Program acclimates incoming freshmen and transfer students to academic life at the college by pairing them with upper-division students who can advise them on research, course selection, professor selection, study skills, and academic opportunities.
  • The Grad School Expo is a spring semester event that provides students with information about graduate programs within the college, including the many applied and professional degree tracks designed to lead to rewarding careers outside of academia.

In addition, the SLC works closely with event organizers and communications staff in the dean's office, FSU student government and the university's Career Center to keep students informed of events and programs sponsored by the college and the university through a newsletter, an email listserv, and frequent social media posts.

Thank you for supporting the fine work of these exemplary students.  When you give to the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, helping students is the bottom line!
