Throughout the last thirty years, the Spirit Drum has become an iconic symbol for Florida State University. In 1993, Burning Spear refurbished an old drum formerly owned by the Extra Point Club and used it as part of the Charlie Ward for Heisman campaign, garnering local and national media attention. The original drum was destroyed in 1997 while en route to the Miami game, and a new drum was created that has been refurbished many times and maintained by the Students in Burning Spear.
In order for this great tradition to continue, a new drum with more modern construction will be built in cooperation with the FSU Master Craftsman Studio and we need your financial commitment to continue the legacy of the Spirit Drum.
Once a new drum is unveiled, the historic drum will be retired and on permanent loan to the University, where it will be showcased in the New Student Union.
