Throughout the last thirty years, the Spirit Drum has become an iconic symbol for Florida State University. In 1993, Burning Spear refurbished an old drum formerly owned by the Extra Point Club and used it as part of the Charlie Ward for Heisman campaign, garnering local and national media attention. The original drum was destroyed in 1997 while en route to the Miami game, and a new drum was created that has been refurbished many times and maintained by the Students in Burning Spear.
In order for this great tradition to continue, a new drum with more modern construction will be built in cooperation with the FSU Master Craftsman Studio and we need your financial commitment to continue the legacy of the Spirit Drum. Once a new drum is unveiled, the historic drum will be retired and on permanent loan to the University, where it will be showcased in the New Student Union.
Gifts of all sizes are appreciated and gifts over $1250 will include a customized plaque on the side of the drum. Once your gift is made, you will be contacted to select the placement of your plaque. All plaques will be installed at the time the Drum is unveiled and will remain in place for five years. (see image in slideshow above)
* All funds raised in excess will be used to provide general support for Burning Spear at Florida State University. Funds will be used to further the organization's mission to promote and advance outstanding students and traditions at Florida State University.
