Cultivating a culture of philanthropy

Annual gifts are vital to the long-term financial health of the Florida State University College of Arts and Sciences, and the act of making annual contributions nurtures a tradition of giving among alumni, parents, and friends, laying the groundwork for larger future investments in the college.

Primarily, annual contributions help sustain the college’s day-to-day operations, supporting faculty, students and programs. Previous annual gifts have, for example, provided funding for a faculty member to conduct research in specialized archives in France in relation to FSU’s Department of History’s Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution, the only graduate program in the U.S. dedicated solely to the historical study of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era. Research trips are just one way flexible, private financial resources have directly influenced an academic program.

Graduate students also benefit from annual gifts. Such funding can offset the cost of attending an academic conference or seminar to present research, which is particularly important because academic conferences are the vehicles thorough which graduate students network and are afforded professional opportunities that result in full-time employment or a postdoctoral scholar position.

Annual fund dollars can create life-changing experiences for undergraduate students, too. One summer spent working in a principal investigator’s lab exposes the undergrad to an extended period of research and suddenly they’re applying to graduate school.

These gifts also fund special events such as invited speakers, visiting professors, and general programmatic needs of the college as determined by the dean and department chairs. Having consistent funding means the college can maintain its high standard of education and research and continue to attract top talent and foster a vibrant academic environment.

We invite you to make a gift that will serve as the lifeblood of the college, ensuring its continued growth and academic excellence.
