Support the Sustainability Fellows!

Thank you for considering a donation to our Spark campaign! Below are the stories of four students who served as Sustainability Fellows in the past, and who were able to make a positive community impact thanks to your donations. All donations from this FSU's Great Give campaign will go toward supporting our future Sustainability Fellows. Camila Campos Lam

In Spring 2025, Camila worked with the Apalachee Regional Planning Council on their Sustainable Building Materials project to identify items that could be used in affordable housing projects. She had the opportunity to participate in site visits to see houses that needed repair, and identify the materials they used and how to improve upon them through sustainable action. “This opportunity ignited my passion for urban planning and how this field can make a positive impact on people's lives. I'm now further exploring this passion through pursuing a Master's of Science and Planning at FSU,” said Camila.

Harper West

In Spring 2025, Harper worked with the Florida Springs Council on a critical project: researching and tracking climate and energy bills during the 2025 legislative session. For this project, Harper researched and read through bills, breaking down the jargon and tracking the bills through committee meetings. Post being a Fellow, Harper now works part-time with the Florida Springs Council as a Bill Tracking Assistant. “This opportunity has helped me develop an important skill of conversing with lawmakers and understanding the tactics of negotiation; it's helped me build my confidence when speaking to people in a position of power,” said Harper.

Will Hill

In Summer 2024, Will worked with the FSU College of Motion Picture Arts to implement more sustainable film set practices that comply with the PEACHy framework, from the Environmental Media Association Green Seal program. This initiative aimed to find sustainable avenues that align with the film industry’s growing commitment to environmentalism, such as cutting down on waste produced on set, repurposing materials, and being intentional in the environmental messages in cinema. “Across so many different colleges and departments, the Fellows program is making a nice link between FSU and the broader community, with the sustainability element as the connecting factor,” said Will.

Marley Barrows

In Spring 2025, Marley worked with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) on developing recycling and waste reduction economic benefits educational materials. As a fellow, Marley researched economics applied to an environmental setting through methodologies like the valuation of recycling. After completing her Fellowship, Marley now works part-time with FDEP as an Environmental Specialist. “It was great having a connection with FDEP through the Fellows program, I feel like the structure of the program was huge for my professional success, my career, and confidence,” said Marley.
