Arts in NYC: Dance Program Support

“This program built an invaluable bridge from college to the professional world. My Arts in NYC internship led directly to a development fellowship and ultimately to my dream role at The Joyce Theater, where I now support myself fully in New York City.”

Rachel Fontenot, Alumni/The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc.

ARTS in NYC is a fully credited semester program, administered by the School of Dance in the FSU College of Fine Arts, that immerses nine participating undergraduate and graduate students in professional dance training and the broader arts ecosystem of New York City. The program includes a 6‑credit core course, attendance at live professional performances, supplemental studio classes with leading arts organizations, and structured professional development opportunities designed to prepare students for careers in the arts.

The Arts in NYC program does more than enhance résumés; it builds professional networks, strengthens student confidence, and advances the career trajectories of the undergrads and graduate students who travel to New York City each spring.

Donor gifts directly support student learning and access by helping to:

  • Pay for required studio classes

  • Cover tickets to live performances

  • Provide OMNY cards for student transportation

  • Support participation in conferences such as APAP

  • Expand access to professional networking opportunities in NYC

“Arts in NYC launched my professional dance career and connected me to the network that still sustains me today. I’m now performing, freelancing, and writing as a dance critic — opportunities that all trace back to the people and experiences I gained during my semester in the city.”

Emma Morris, Alumni/Dancer/Critic

ARTS in NYC is directed by Associate Professor Hannah Schwadron.

ARTS in NYC introduces students to the professional dance world, not as tourists but as working members of the inner community. The program offers a supportive way to study for a semester in NYC while learning to navigate the city and the arts. As a fully accredited program, ARTS in NYC offers structured classes and carefully selected internships that help students assess how they might fit into the field. ARTS in NYC is a mentored system of interlocking classes, performances, and events that immerse students in NYC arts and culture. This enables students to use the city as an arts resource and allows them to begin serious networking and gain confidence for the future.

Guest speakers have included: Monica Bill Barnes, Bill T. Jones, Ana “Rockafella” Garcia, “Storyboard P,” Noemie LaFrance, Ephrat Asherie, Brahms “Bravo” LaFortune, Okwui Okpokwasili, Doug Elkins, Nora Chipaumire, and Jorge “PopMaster Fabel” Pabon. Additionally, participating students enjoy opportunities to engage with the broadening network of ARTS in NYC alumni to build professional contacts.
