SSTRIDE: Science Students Together Reaching Instructional Diversity & Excellence

SSTRIDE is an outreach effort of the FSU College of Medicine that has been impacting the lives of students it serves since 1994.  The mission of this program is to identify students who have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in science, engineering, mathematics, health, or medicine and to give those students support services important for them to develop the sense of responsibility, focus, and motivation necessary for success in their chosen fields.

The SSTRIDE program conducts its amazing work by partnering with schools across the state of Florida and working directly with school administrators and teachers to help meet the needs of students within the classroom. SSTRIDE specifically has a focus on working with students who come from rural, minority, or low socioeconomic backgrounds as these students often face additional barriers in their path to pursue their education. Some examples of these barriers include being the first in their family to pursue an undergraduate education and lack of access to financial support/resources. The SSTRIDE program works to eliminate these barriers by connecting students with mentors, encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM through initiatives such as the SSTRIDE Summer Institute, and by providing students with scholarships and other necessary resources.

This program has components set up to support students not only at the middle and high school level but also at the undergraduate and graduate level, thus, providing ongoing and consistent support to students in their journey to success. All funds collected will be used to create a scholarship for high achieving SSTRIDE High School Seniors who wish to pursue a college education. The aim of this scholarship is to help provide students with access to funds as they transition from high school to college as this can often be a very financially straining time for students.
