Beginning college is an exciting time for new students - but it's not without its struggles. The uncertainty of moving away, the rigors of academic programs, and taking out loans to pay for living expenses and supplies adds stress to what should be a smooth transition.
For economically-disadvantaged students, the struggle is worse.
I had to be strict with my budget. I allocated $150 for food each month and sometimes had to choose materials over food.

The Materials & Supply Fund in Interior Design aims to assist our economically-disadvantaged students with this transition to college by purchasing supply kits that will provide them with materials necessary for success in the Department of Interior Architecture & Design.
Our goal is to purchase 20 kits, each of which costs $250 and will contain:
0.5 mm mechanical pencil • 0.5 mm lead (2H, B, HB, 2B) • kneaded eraser • mechanical eraser & 2 refills • erasing shield • lettering guide • circle template • Interior Design template • drafting dots • 24" stainless steel T-square • 6" semi-circular protractor • 12" 30/60 triangle • 8" 45/90 triangle • 12" architect scale • 18" aluminum ruler • chip board • scissors • large eraser • 8.5" x 11" vellum pad • 18" x 50 yds. white trace paper • Crayola 10-marker set • 12" x 18" cutting mat • X-Acto Knife with blades • utility knife and blades • Prismacolor 12-color set • handheld pencil sharpener • Sharpie Fine Point • Sharpie Ultra Fine Point • white paint pen • 20" x 26" portfolio
It was difficult and embarrassing to present my project, produced on a limited budget, alongside a student colleague who did not have funding restrictions.
