Self-Care and A Safe Place for Social Workers

Students at FSU's College of Social Work are called to careers that transform lives and communities for good. They strive to build a more empathic and civil society for those they serve. It's rewarding but hard work, requiring these students who care so deeply about others to wrestle with difficult issues around child welfare, criminal justice, substance use, trauma, and more. FSU's College of Social Work strives to foster a safe place and a culture of self-care that helps students stay strong, grounded, and committed to the profession. Your gift helps us to:

  • support students to attend conferences where they can expand their knowledge and networks,
  • stock the shelves of the "BSW Bodega" where students can drop by for a free snack and an encouraging word from faculty and staff,
  • underwrite monthly student-led self-care events,
  • celebrate student success with awards ceremonies,
  • respond to an emerging need, like supporting students' return to campus after a loss or hardship and much more!

The College of Social Work Tradition of Excellence Fund enables us to meet students where they are and support them in staying the course to achieve their goals. All funds raised are used in accordance with the established fund guidelines to support these and other needs of the College of Social Work.

Isabella Daniels, Master of Social Work student"The College of Social Work creates space, events, and community emphasizing the importance of self-care for us and our future clients. It’s so often overlooked because it’s on us as individuals and life gets busy. I can’t wait to see what the college has in store for us to teach us how to really take care of ourselves so that we keep making the changes we want to see in this world." - Isabella Daniels, MSW Student

"Professional self-care is paramount for competent and ethical social work practice. Professional demands, challenging workplace climates, and exposure to trauma warrant that social workers maintain personal and professional health, safety, and integrity. Social work organizations, agencies, and educational institutions are encouraged to promote organizational policies, practices, and materials to support social workers’ self-care."  - National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics, 2021
