You're invited to support the FSU choral program's involvement in Andrea Ramsey's multi-movement Suffrage Cantata commission! FSU's participation in this work will honor the inspirational teaching of former faculty member, Dr. Judy Bowers. Andrea Ramsey commits to composing this historic work to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the women's suffrage movement. In Ramsey's words, it will be a "modern oratorio toggling between first and third person perspectives with creative interplay between solo and chorus, yet melodic, tonal, and rich in heart." The piece will take audiences on a journey through history, from the initial conversations about women's rights to the ratification of the 19th amendment. The text will explore the words of women such as Susan B. Anthony, Victoria Woodhull, Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth, and more. In addition to the 25-30 minute work for treble chorus, soli piano, narration, and optional string quartet, the commission includes visual media to help tell the story to modern audiences.
Our goal is to raise $2500 to help current treble students find their voice through this piece of history. We are confident that the work will impact not only the choral singers at FSU, but will also transform audiences.
