This space will provide learning opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students who will hone their skills in engaging with families, children, and various professionals. The space will create opportunities for research faculty, clinical faculty and community partners to develop and implement programs to enhance language, literacy, auditory and social development in a multisensory learning environment.
To make our dreams come alive, we are developing a space with inclusive center-based learning for whole child development. The Communication Corner will provide children with disabilities a variety of activities in a group setting, with opportunities for sensory-motor play, engagement in literacy learning, dramatic play, art exploration, and STEM activities. These centers will support development within the following domains: adaptive/self-help, cognition, communication, fine/gross motor, and personal/social skills.
Our plans for the Communication Corner draw on the virtues that define Florida State University: transformative daring, inspired excellence, dynamic inclusiveness, responsible stewardship, and engaged community. The Communication Corner will be a place that supports an engaged community of researchers, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, related professionals (occupational therapists, teachers, physical therapists, etc.), students, and families collaborating to support children with disabilities. In this inclusive space, the needs of children with diverse disabilities will be addressed, and the unique skills of these children will be enhanced and celebrated. FSU students and faculty will actively engage in responsible stewardship and demonstrate inspired excellence in their evidence-based and enthusiastic work supporting children and their families.
We invite you to join in creating opportunities for FSU students to participate in this transformative training experience. In addition to the enhancements to clinical training for students, the Communication Corner will offer exciting new research possibilities for students and faculty. The Communication Corner will provide a context to build capacity for the transfer of knowledge between research and high-quality clinical services.
We are so fortunate to have a newly designed space at the FSU Speech and Hearing Clinic! Now we just need your help to ensure that the Communication Corner can sustain programs that incorporate student education along with meeting the communication & social needs of families and children within the local community.
